8 May
It was a long holiday in China. Labor Day was from 1-5 / 05. Luckily, there were not many people. We went to the inner palace but couldn't walk any further, so we walked out first. But overall, it was very spacious. We could walk around all day without getting bored. There were many places to take pictures. Even though there were many people, there were still places to hide. If anyone dressed as a princess or prince came to take pictures, it would be very cute. There were booths selling food at the riverside park. The trip was easy. On the day of the appointment, we went late, so we missed the tour. But we saw the tour guide John doing his job perfectly, standing and telling the history of the palace. But this was a walking route, so we took a walk instead. For those who bought tickets from Klook, you can open a voucher to enter the gates in the app. Both the entrance gate (must enter at the north gate) and the inner palace gate. We went with my husband and child. You can park your stroller in front of the gate, but there was no staff to take care of it because we spent almost half an hour in the palace. When we got back, the stroller and the stuff in the stroller were still there, but I recommend bringing a baby carrier because you have to lift the stroller up and down at some points. Next time, I might have the chance to buy a ticket to get on and off the boat. It should be a good experience.

Bob was an excellent guide who gave us a lot of stories, insight, and interesting anecdotes on our tour. The tour felt well-paced, and there was a nice balance of breaks. would definitely recommend for a first-time traveler to the Summer Palace

The Temple of Heaven is so beautiful! You must go~~ The tour guide clearly explained many interesting stories and details, and you can learn more about many related historical stories! However, the package did not include the Summer Palace and Old Summer Palace cruise and shuttle bus. The tour guide told us that they had to be purchased separately when we were on the bus. As a result, the Summer Palace boat and shuttle bus alone cost more than NT$900 per person, which seemed a bit rip-off. Later, due to bad weather and strong winds, we did not get on the Old Summer Palace boat. In addition, because there are three scenic spots in total, the time for visiting each place is a little bit tight. However, after a whole day in the three scenic spots, it is actually very tiring. If you don’t want to be cheated or just want to visit by yourself, you can consider buying your own tickets during the non-peak season, and then do some homework! However, ordering with Klook is indeed very convenient, and you don’t have to worry about too many things. It is suitable for people who don’t have time to prepare and do homework! You will receive the collection and tour guide information on time the day before, which is very convenient and guaranteed!

Andy is a really good guide. Even though we speak different languages, he really tried his best to take care of our family for a day. I would like to meet Andy again next time I come to Beijing. Good 👍

Cultural and Historical Significance

The Old Summer Palace, built in the 18th and early 19th centuries, was the primary imperial residence of the Qing dynasty. Often referred to as the 'Garden of Gardens,' it was home to a vast collection of Chinese art, architecture, and historical treasures. Its destruction during the Second Opium War in 1860 is a poignant chapter in Chinese history, symbolizing the nation's 'Century of Humiliation.'

Scenic Gardens

The Imperial Gardens of the Old Summer Palace were divided into three main sections: the Garden of Perfect Brightness, the Garden of Eternal Spring, and the Garden of Elegant Spring. These gardens, with their tranquil lakes, meandering streams, and rolling hills, were designed to create a harmonious and picturesque landscape, offering a serene escape from the bustling city.

Architectural Splendor

Originally comprising five garden residences, the Old Summer Palace featured a unique blend of traditional Chinese and European-style architecture. The Qianlong Emperor's fascination with exotic cultures led to the creation of 'hybrid' structures, with Western stone facades built over traditional Chinese wooden frames, showcasing a remarkable architectural fusion.

Art and Artifacts

The Old Summer Palace once housed some of China's most treasured art and artifacts. Many of these items were looted during the 1860 assault, including the famous bronze animal heads representing the 12 animals of the zodiac. Efforts to reclaim these invaluable treasures continue to this day, highlighting their cultural significance.
